The Beggar and the Fat Man
An old rabbi, almost penniless himself, lived in a small town in Russia. If ever a beggar asked him for money, he would always oblige, even if it was only a tiny amount. One day, his grandson asked him, “Grandpa, don’t you think those people are just fooling you, that they don’t actually need the… — read more

An instagram picture: I’ve always wanted a magnetic rack for my #kitchen #knives but have never got round to it until now. Happy with this. L to R: Sabatier (carbon), Robert Herder (very thin knife great for veggies), one-off knife from Hungarian maker Jenesec, a real powerhouse, handmade knife from a Dutch maker (with Niolox steel and bog oak in the handle plus some mammoth Ivory), and three Pallares Solsona blades which are a delight in the kitchen.

The Asshole Factory
Great article from Umair Haque on the sterility of the modern world: The Great Enterprise of the Age of Stagnation is the wholesale manufacture not of great, world-shaking, ground-breaking ideas, inventions, concerns…but of bigger and bigger assholes. The chain-store; the mall; the hypermarket. The corporation; the firm; the partnership. B-school; law school; med school. The… — read more

The Unquiet Grave
I love the absolute clarity of this description by Cyril Connolly of life (or at least his life) in the Med in the late 30s: ‘Early morning on the Mediterranean: bright air resinous with Aleppo pine, water spraying over the gleaming tarmac of the Route Nationale and darkly reflecting the spring-summer green of the planes;… — read more

A Turk appears in an Australian court
WARNING: Not for the very easily offended, but apparently true. And outrageously funny. Transcript from a pretrial hearing that took place on May 5 1997 in a criminal court in Adelaide, Australia, before Judge Roy Grubb. In the transcript, the prisoner is Yusuf Biyikli, a Turkish immigrant charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Mr… — read more
